Down the ALICE rabbit hole
2018-11-14 - 9:13 p.m.

I went to the parent coffee meeting at Will’s school today. It also served as a Parent Advisory Group meeting, and included a discussion of the ALICE crisis/active shooter program they’re using. Let’s see if I can remember what I learned:
Alert
Lockdown (enhanced)
Inform
Counter
Evacuate

I also learned that if you have to break a window to evacuate, you should aim for the corners instead of the center. And if you have to escape out a window and it’s not on the first floor, you should lower yourself as much as you can so you’re essentially dangling before you let go because this puts you way closer to the ground.

So many things to think about. So many things I wish could be pushed aside, but we all need to know them. Just in case.

We also learned that, thanks to fire safety protocols and improvements in code, the last time a child died in a school fire was 1950. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could do the same for school shootings?
